Our Mission:
At St. Alexis, we strive to be holy in all we do:
Holy in our desire to make the world a more loving, Christ-centered place;
Holy in our aims to better ourselves;
Holy in our silence through prayer;
Holy in our words of comfort to those afflicted;
Holy in our invitation for all people, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or political preferences, to come and worship together;
Holy in our knowledge that the church walls do not restrain the Gospel but form a place from which the Gospel rushes into our surrounding community;
Holy in our understanding that these things are possible through individual and communal covenants with Christ that extend God’s love and grace beyond the single cup from which we all drink.
2009 Vacation Bible School!
We will be offering VBS for children (4-high school) June 8-12 at St. Mark's Church just west of downtown Jackson. This is our third year of partnering with St. Mark's. There is no charge.
Want to help? We need adults to help teach, prepare lunch and snacks, and help in other ways. We have already had a great response to our requests for help. We still need the following: Sliced ham, turkey, and cheese, brownies(for Tues.); beefy mac & cheese cassarole, salad (Wed.); popsicles, pizza (Fri.); juice boxes, kool-aid (all week). Signup sheets for volunteers are available - ask LeahBeth, Sarah or Chuck for more information.
Serving at Stewpot on Sunday, May 31
We are responsible for fixing and serving lunch at Stewpot on Sunday, May 31. Judy Barnes is coordinating this effort and needs help in preparation of the meal. Judy asks that you please bring a dessert, rolls or salad if you can. Bagged salad is fine and packaged cookies or rolls and 'store bought' desserts are perfect. Any food that's left over will be used for the meals-on-wheels program during the week.
If you can help SERVE lunch, it'd be great! You don't have to bring anything, just come for the "people" part. You're needed and very welcome!
We will meet in the St. Alexis parking lot at 12:30pm this Sunday May 31 and caravan or carpool to Stewpot. Lunch is served at 1:00pm. We usually serve lunch to around 200 homeless and neighborhood people. Come have fun together while serving those in need.
Sunday, May 31 - Feast of Pentecost - One church service
We will not have services at the church that morning or evening this Sunday, May 31. Instead we will be celebrating the Feast of Pentecost at Laurel Street Park in Belhaven.
We will celebrate this important feast day by having a special Holy Eucharist in the park at 5:00pm with a potluck service following the service. We are also pleased to be joined in our celebration by the Rev. Authur Toro, Vicar of the Anglican Church of Christ the Savior, and by members of his congregation.
Bring lawn chairs or a picnic blanket, and if you are able, a dish to contribute to the meal. You are invited to wear red as part of the celebration. In Acts, the coming of the Holy Spirit is said to be like a mighty rushing wind. So feel free to bring "wind toys": kites, airplanes, bubble stuff, and other fun things. We will have helium balloons on hand as well.
